Dividing by 365 is the version that drifts

Divide days by 365 and the answer is short by about six hours a year, because the calendar averages 365.2425 days. For a delivery estimate that is nothing. For an age in years, a sentence, a visa count or a warranty it accumulates: 10,000 days is 27.40 years at 365.2425 and 27.397 at 365, and 100,000 days puts the two answers 4.7 months apart.

This page divides by 365.2425, the Gregorian mean. Where an answer has to match a legal or contractual count, the safer method is not a division at all — count calendar dates, because a period from one date to the same date next year is one year regardless of how many days it happened to contain.

A period of days has no fixed number of months in it

Ninety days is not three months. Depending on where it starts, ninety days spans anywhere from just under three months to nearly three and a quarter, because months hold 28 to 31 days. Schengen’s ninety-day rule, notice periods and probationary terms are all written in one unit or the other deliberately, and reading one as the other is a common and expensive mistake.

When a rule says days, count days. When it says months, count months on a calendar. Converting between them gives an estimate, and this page gives the honest one, but it cannot tell you what a contract meant by its unit.
