Divide by fourteen and keep the remainder

The useful answer is a whole number of stones plus a remainder in pounds, not a decimal. 158 lb divided by 14 is 11 remainder 4, and that is spoken as eleven stone four. A calculator reading 11.29 stone has answered a question nobody asks aloud; the fractional part still has to be multiplied by 14 to become pounds.

Anchors make the division unnecessary. 140 lb is exactly 10 stone, 154 lb is 11, 168 lb is 12, and every further stone is another 14. Counting up or down in fourteens from the nearest anchor is faster than dividing, and it hands you the remainder for free.

The half stone is a real unit, even though it is not an official one

Seven pounds is half a stone, and in Britain that is the step in which weight loss and gain are discussed - half a stone, rather than 3.2 kg or 7 lb. Slimming groups, GPs and gym conversations all use it, which makes 7 lb a far more meaningful quantity in Britain than it is in the United States.

Beyond body weight the unit disappears. Parcels, luggage, ingredients and gym plates are never given in stones, in Britain any more than anywhere else, and the NHS records weight in kilograms regardless. The stone survives in one narrow place: how a person describes their own weight.
